1. Is DEF the Same as Diesel Additive?
No! Never pour DEF into your diesel fuel tank. It goes into a separate, smaller tank with a blue cap. If you put it in the fuel tank, it will destroy your fuel pump and injectors instantly.
2. What is DEF Made Of?
It is a mixture of 32.5% high-purity synthetic urea and 67.5% deionized water. The ratio is very specific. If the water isn’t pure (deionized), the minerals will ruin the catalyst.
3. Does DEF Freeze?
Yes, it freezes at around -11°C. However, the DEF tank in your vehicle usually has a heater to melt it quickly. Even if it freezes, it is safe to use once it thaws.
4. How Much DEF Will I Use?
A general rule of thumb for trucks is that you will use about 2% to 3% DEF compared to your diesel consumption. So, for every 100 liters of diesel you burn, you will need about 2 to 3 liters of DEF.
5. How Do I Store It?
Keep it out of direct sunlight and high heat. If stored properly in a cool, dry place, it can last up to a year. If it sits in the baking sun, the urea can break down and become less effective.
